The months between March and November are the best for visiting Turkey. During July and August, southern portion of Turkey can be very hot. Turkey contains a wide range  of climates, with coastal areas being generally more temperate compared to the interior. Winters in the central Anatolian plateau and in the mountainous eastern region of the country can be really severe with temperatures below the freezing point. Istanbul's climate is quite similar to that of New York, though drier in summer and wetter and with lighter snowfall in winter. Along the Aegean coast, the climate remains quite comfortable until early November, though nights can by that time have become chilly. July and August are good months to visit eastern Turkey from Black Sea coast to Lake Van area in the southeast. The Mediterranean coast of Turkey has typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot humid summers. During July and August, it is a better idea to visit Istanbul rather than south coast. It is pleasanter and more interesting, because there are fewer contenders at the major tourist sites and the life is intact as many Istanbullus flee the city during high summer.
